Artists Selected from Fine Arts BA Courses at the Wrexham School of Creative Arts & Coleg Menai
O fewn sioeau gradd Celfyddyd Gain Ysgol Gelf Wrecsam a Choleg Menai rhennir y ffocws ar y materol a thrin y cyffyrddadwy-yn aml at drothwy dymchwel. Mae'r thema gyffredin hon yn arddangos ymgysylltiad yr Artistiaid â natur gorfforol eu cyfryngau, gan archwilio ffurfiau ac ystyron newydd.
Mae’ sioe radd Wrecsam, am y tro cyntaf ers dros ddegawd, wedi’i harddangos y tu allan i safle traddodiadol yr ysgol. Ychwanega’r hen uned fanwerthu ddimensiwn unigryw i'r arddangosfa- ei leoliad anghonfensiynol yn pwysleisio ymhellach ddulliau arloesol yr artistiaid, gan drawsnewid gofod masnachol yn ofod cyffyrddol ar gyfer deialogau celf gyfoes. Trwy lunio rhwydwaith gyfoethog o syniadau a dulliau, mae'r ddwy arddangosfa yn nodi ac yn dyrannu'r naratifau hyn.
Mae’r Artist Leah Foulkes (Wrecsam) yn trawsnewid darnau pren caled yn gerfluniau hylifol sy’n newid y gofod yn fedrus. Mae ei gwaith yn plethu deunyddiau organig yn ddi-dor gyda dyluniad modern, gan greu gweithiau safle-benodol sy’n herio canfyddiadau o gadernid a gofod. Mae cerfluniau Foulkes yn gwahodd gwylwyr i archwilio'r cydadwaith rhwng ffurfiau naturiol ac arloesedd pensaernïol. Mae Elouise Hawes (Wrecsam) yn cyfuno peintio haniaethol â thrin deunyddiau trwy liwio a phwytho ffabrig voile, gan greu darnau deinamig, gweadog. Mae ei defnydd arloesol o ffabrig a lliw yn amlygu’r posibiliadau o gyfuno technegau traddodiadol â haniaethu artistig cyfoes.
The Fine Art degree shows from Wrexham School of Art and Coleg Menai highlight a shared focus on materiality and the manipulation of the tangible, often to the brink of collapse. This thematic commonality showcases the artists' engagement with the physicality of their mediums, exploring new forms and meanings.
Wrexham's degree show, for the first time in over a decade, was displayed externally to its traditional school site. The old retail unit added a unique dimension to the exhibition. It’s unconventional venue further emphasised the artists' innovative approaches, transforming a commercial space into a tactile space for contemporary art dialogues. Both exhibitions identify and dissect these narratives, compiling a rich network of ideas and approaches.
Artist Leah Foulkes (Wrexham) skillfully transforms hardwood pieces into fluid, space-altering sculptures. Her work seamlessly blends organic materials with modern design, creating site specific works that challenge perceptions of solidity and space. Foulkes' sculptures invite viewers to explore the interplay between natural forms and architectural innovation. Meanwhile, Elouise Hawes (Wrexham) combines abstract painting with material manipulation through dying and stitching voile fabric, resulting in dynamic, textured pieces. Her innovative use of fabric and color highlights the possibilities of merging traditional techniques with contemporary artistic abstraction.
Mae'r ddau Artist yn dangos awydd cryf i gyfeirio at eu hamgylcheddau uniongyrchol yn Wrecsam, yn bensaernïol ac fel ffiniau ffisegol. Drwy wneud hyn, maent nid yn unig yn gwella effaith gweledol eu gwaith ond hefyd yn dyfnhau’r elfen gysyniadol. Mae hyn yn gwahodd y gwylwyr i ystyried sut y gall celf ryngweithio’n ddeinamig â’i chyd-destun gofodol ac hefyd codi cwestiynau ehangach am le, hunaniaeth, a phrofiad dynol.
Mae Joshua Griffith (Coleg Menai) yn adeiladu cerfluniau cymhellol gan ddefnyddio plastr, papier-mâché, a fframiau gwifren. Mae ei gerfluniau troellog yn rhoi persbectif unigryw ar y rhyngweithio rhwng natur a strwythurau o waith dyn, yn enwedig ar bwyntiau cydgyfeirio a dargyfeirio. Mae archwiliad Griffith yn ymestyn y tu hwnt i'r ffurfiau corfforol i ymchwilio i'r cysylltiadau cywrain o fewn y corff dynol. Trwy ei ddefnydd ymarferol o ddeunyddiau, mae’n archwilio themâu bregusrwydd a gwydnwch, gan greu gweithiau celf sy’n adlewyrchu’r cydadwaith cymhleth rhwng ein synhwyrau corfforol a chyflyrau emosiynol.
Mae pob Artist yn llywio arferion cyfoes gyda’r bwriad o fynd i’r afael â phosibiliadau materol, ymgysylltu â’r hunan ac i ddychmygu dyfodol amrywiol, ar gyfer disgwrs celfyddyd gain ond hefyd fel Artistiaid newydd sy’n camu i ofod o ansicrwydd cynyddol.
Both artists indeed demonstrate a strong inclination towards referencing their immediate environments in Wrexham, both architecturally and as physical boundaries. By doing so, they not only enhance the visual impact of their work but also deepen its conceptual resonance, inviting viewers to consider how art can interact dynamically with its spatial context and evoke broader questions about place, identity, and human experience.
Joshua Griffith (Coleg Menai) constructs compelling sculptures using plaster, papier-mâché, and wireframes. His bendy sculptures provide unique perspectives on the interaction between nature and man-made structures, especially at points of convergence and divergence. Griffith's exploration extends beyond the physical forms to delve into the intricate connections within the human body. Through his hands-on use of materials, he examines themes of vulnerability and resilience, creating artworks that reflect the complex interplay between our physical sensations and emotional states.
Each artist navigates contemporary practices with the intention to confront material possibilities, engage with the self and to envision diverse futures, both for fine art discourse but also as emerging artists heading into a space of increasing precarity.
“Mae ein Campws Stryt y Rhaglaw yn gartref i’n cyrsiau celf a dylunio. Mae gan y campws naws ysgol gelf draddodiadol sy'n eich cofleidio o'r eiliad y byddwch chi'n dod i mewn i'r adeilad. Mae'n adeilad Fictoraidd godidog, wedi'i leoli ger canol y dref, sydd wedi'i drawsnewid i mewn i stiwdios.
Gan weithio gyda staff profiadol sy’n weithgar yn y diwydiant, bydd myfyrwyr yn dysgu sut i greu delweddau cymhellol, gweithio i safonau proffesiynol a deall sut mae eu gwaith yn ffitio i mewn i’r diwydiant.
Bydd myfyrwyr yn cael eu cyflwyno i brosesau creadigol proffesiynol ac yn cael eu hannog i ehangu eu galluoedd trwy weithdai a phrosiectau ymarferol."
"Our Regent Street Campus is home to our art and design courses.
The campus has a traditional art school feel which embraces you
from the moment you enter the building. It is a magnificent Victorian building, located near the town centre, which has been converted
into studios.
Working with experienced and industry-active staff, students will learn how to create compelling images, work to professional standards and understand how their work fits into the industry.
Students will be introduced to professional creative processes and encouraged to expand their abilities through workshops and practical projects."
Mae Leah Foulkes yn ymroddedig i archwilio defnyddiau a phrofi eu terfynau i greu ystod o wahanol weithiau celf; o gerflunio i luniadu, peintio a gosodiadau safle-benodol. Yn fwy diweddar mae Leah wedi bod yn gwthio terfynau trwy ddefnyddio stribedi o fwrdd caled i greu cerfluniau.
//
Leah Foulkes is dedicated to the exploration of materials and testing their limits to create a range of different artworks; from sculpture to drawing, painting and site specific installations. More recently Leah has been testing the limits of using strips of hardboard to create sculptures.
Mae Foulkes wedi cael ei swyno gan bensaernïaeth a theithio i lefydd newydd i'w gwerthfawrogi. Mae'r diddordeb hwn yn ymestyn i werthfawrogiad o'r amgylchedd adfeiliedig, wedi pydru a dadfeiliedig; mae hyn wedi bod yn ysbrydoliaeth i’r gwaith y mae hi’n ei greu. O'r ysbrydoliaeth gychwynnol yma mae ei gwaith wedi dod yn fwyfwy haniaethol ac wedi datblygu i fod yn archwiliad materol yn hytrach na chael ei ddylanwadu'n uniongyrchol gan y bensaernïaeth yn weledol. Mae ei gwaith diweddaraf a ddangosir yma yn ganlyniad arbrawf manwl gyda stribedi bwrdd caled sydd wedi mynd trwy lawer o wahanol brosesau ac archwiliadau i gyrraedd y pwynt hwn.
//
Foulkes has always been fascinated by architecture and travelling to new places to appreciate it. This interest extends to the appreciation of the derelict, dilapidated and decayed environment; this has been an inspiration for the work that she creates. From this initial inspiration her work has steadily become more abstract and has developed into a material exploration rather than being directly influenced by the architecture visually. Her most recent work shown here is an outcome of an in-depth experiment with hardboard strips that has gone through many different processes and explorations to get to this point.
Mae gwaith Eloise Hawes yn seiliedig ar ei diddordeb mewn ffurfiau a strwythurau pensaernïol. Mae ei gwaith yn archwilio symlrwydd ffurf adeiladau mewn ffordd haniaethol ac mae hi’n defnyddio AI i symleiddio adeiladau â ffotograffau a phaentiadau i’w prosesu i bwynt haniaethol. Mae pwysigrwydd fframiau yn amlwg yn ei gwaith, gan ei bod, yn ei geiriau ei hun yn dweud “Yn debyg i adeiladau, y ffrâm yw cam pwysicaf mewn cynhyrchiad gan fod yr haenau ar y tu allan angen y gefnogaeth a’r sefydlogrwydd hwnnw” sy’n ymwneud â’r ffabrig rhwyll fregus a welir yn ei darnau, gan eu bod yn gryfach unwaith maent ar ffrâm.
//
Eloise Hawes’s work is based off her interest in architectural forms and structures. Her work explores the simplicity of the form of buildings in a abstract way and she uses AI to simplify photographed buildings and paintings to process it to a point of abstraction. The importance of frames is apparent in her work - “Similar to buildings, the frame is the most important and thought about stage in production as the layers on the outside need that support and stability”.
Mae ei gwaith yn dechrau gyda ffotograffiaeth, yna mae hi yn creu delwedd collage ag ef, ac yna’n creu paentiad o'r collage. Yna, yn y pen draw ar ôl mynd trwy goladu pellach ac AI, mae'n cyrraedd pwynt o haniaethu, a’r cyfan sydd ganddi ar ôl yw siapiau syml. Ochr yn ochr â'r ffurfiau syml sydd ar ôl, mae'n ychwanegu lliwiau llachar a chwareus oherwydd cyn dechrau’r broses, mae'r adeiladau y tynnwyd llun ohonynt yn ddiflas ac yn brin o liw. Mae'r darnau a welir yma yn dibynnu ar y defnydd o oleuadau artiffisial i greu'r shifft yn y ffabrig ac i daflu cysgod ar y rhannau o'r ffabrig a argraffwyd arnynt.
//
Her work process starts with photography, which she then creates a collaged image with, and from there she creates a painting from the collage, eventually after going through further collaging and AI she gets to a point of such abstraction, all she is left with is simple shapes. Alongside the simple forms left, she adds bright and playful colours as before the process, the buildings photographed are dull and lack such colour. The pieces seen here, rely on use of artificial lighting to create the warped shift in the fabric and to cast a shadow on the parts of the fabric that have been printed onto.

Cyfres o gerfluniau sy'n archwilio'r berthynas rhwng y naturiol a'r synthetig a geir yma. Nod y gwaith yw cael cip olwg ar natur ddigymell trwy ffurfiau biomorffig ac arwynebau gweadog, tra hefyd yn ymgorffori elfennau o ddylunio diwydiannol.
//
A series of sculptures that explore the relationship between the natural and the synthetic. Their work aims to capture the spontaneity of nature through biomorphic forms and textured surfaces, while also incorporating elements of industrial design.
Mae'r darnau yn ddeialog rhwng yr organig a'r peirianyddol, gan ystyried cyd gysylltiad pob peth a hynny trwy amlygu cyferbyniadau ‘r hyn sy’n debyg.
Yn y pen draw, dathliad o ffurf a gwead yw’r cerfluniau hyn, gan annog gwerthfawrogiad dyfnach o’n hamgylchedd. Mae’r gwaith yn ceisio’r ymdeimlad o barch at gymhlethdodau bywyd sydd o'n cwmpas.

The pieces are a dialogue between the organic and the engineered, speculating upon the interconnectedness of all things. By highlighting both potential contrasts and similarities.
Ultimately, these sculptures are a celebration of form and texture, encouraging a deeper appreciation for our environment. They wish to invoke a sense of reverence for the intricacies of life that surrounds us.
