CURATOR ROSIE WYLLIE

Artists Selected from Fine Arts BA Courses at the Swansea College of Art & the Cardiff School of Art & Design

 Prin fod olion cyfryngau digidol i’w canfod yn sioeau graddedigion Celfyddyd Gain Abertawe a Chaerdydd eleni, er bod ei ddylanwad yn amlwg. Mae pwyslais ar berthnasedd a’r gwaith llaw yn cael ei amlygu fel math o wrthwynebiad i arwynebolrwydd ac uniongyrchedd canfyddedig diwylliant ar-lein. Mae'r Artistiaid newydd hyn yn datgan eu mwynhad o ddeunyddiau a phrosesau, yn ogystal ag ymgysylltu'n feirniadol ag effeithiau technoleg ar ein bywydau.

Mae'r detholiad o weithiau o'r ddwy sioe yn adlewyrchu'r pryderon hyn, tra'n dangos amrywiaeth gyfoethog o syniadau a dulliau. Mae Oisín McDaid (Abertawe) yn cyfuno delweddau a gynhyrchir gan AI â marciau brwsh wedi’u paentio yn ei ludwaith beiddgar, tra bod Ben Cones (Caerdydd) yn archwilio dyfodol dystopaidd, gan annog ymwrthedd i ddylanwad treiddiol deallusrwydd artiffisial yn ei lyfr sydd wedi ei wneud â llaw.

 There is barely a trace of digital media to be found in Swansea and Cardiff’s Fine Art graduate shows this year, though its influence is clear. An emphasis on materiality and the handmade comes across as a form of resistance to the perceived superficiality and immediacy of online culture. These emerging artists are asserting their enjoyment of materials and processes, as well as engaging critically with the effects of technology on our lives.

The selection of works from both shows reflects these concerns, while demonstrating a rich diversity of ideas and approaches. Oisín McDaid (Swansea) combines AI generated images with painted brushstrokes in his bold collages, while Ben Cones (Cardiff) explores a dystopian future, encouraging resistance to the pervasive influence of artificial intelligence in his hand-made book.

 Gweithiau cerameg wedi'u rendro'n ofalus a geir  gan Ewan Coombs (Abertawe) sy’n  ein cyfeirio at ddyfodol dychmygol; awgrymir olion gwaddodol tirweddau diwydiannol a dadfeiliad strwythurau o waith dyn fel safleoedd a allai fodoli ar gyfer ffyrdd newydd o gydfodoli â byd natur. Ym mhaentiadau olew Lucy Cook (Caerdydd) ceir  set iasol o olygfeydd breuddwydiol sy’n archwilio potensial lleoedd cyfyngol mewn trefi maestrefol a lleoliadau glan môr ar arfordir Sir Benfro – mae ffigurau, weithiau’n dameidiog eu hunain, yn cael eu gosod mewn golygfeydd ac amgylchiadau rhannol ddychmygol, swrrealaidd ac eto’n arswydus o gyfarwydd. Mae crefftwaith cain cymhwysiad Cook o baent yn dod ag ymdeimlad o agosatrwydd i'r gwaith.

Amlygir manylder cywrain yng ngwaith  ffabrig pwytho gofalus Naomi Griffiths (Caerdydd)  sydd mewn cyferbyniad, yn drawiadol ei ffurf – yn plygu allan i ofod yr oriel, yn weledol ac yn synhwyrus – archwiliad cymhleth ac anghyfforddus o brofiad benywaidd. Ymgyrfforir egni a chwareusrywdd sioe radd Caerdydd yng ngwaith  Maddie Hobbs sy’n teimlo fel dathliad o beintio yn ei holl ffurfiau. Mae darn cyfrwng cymysg eang Hobbs yn meddiannu darn mawr o gynfas. Mae'n fynegiannol ac yn feiddgar ei ddyluniad, gan gyfeirio at gelf stryd, tirwedd a gwahanol ddulliau o wneud marciau.

Yr hyn sy'n drawiadol am yr holl waith, ac a ymgorfforir yn y detholiad hwn, yw mwynhad ac ymwneud â chyffyrddiad arwyneb a chorfforol defnyddiau. Mae pob artist yn dangos sut y gellir archwilio syniadau cymhleth, cyfoes gyda a thrwy brosesau wedi’u gwneud â llaw, gan gynnig llwybrau tuag at ddychmygu dyfodol gwahanol, archwilio hunanoldeb a mynd i’r afael â chwestiynau dybryd ein hoes.

 Carefully rendered ceramic works by Ewan Coombs (Swansea) also point us to an imagined future; the sedimentary remnants of industrial landscapes and decay of manmade structures are suggested as sites of potential for new ways of co-existing with the natural world. And an eery set of dreamlike scenes depicted in Lucy Cook’s oil paintings (Cardiff) explore the potential of liminal places in suburban towns and seaside locations on the Pembrokeshire coast – figures, sometimes themselves fragmented, are placed in partially imagined scenes and circumstances, surreal yet hauntingly familiar. The delicate craftsmanship in Cook’s application of paint brings a sense of intimacy to the work.

Careful stitching and intricate detail are prominent in Naomi Griffiths’ fabric piece (Cardiff), which by contrast, is imposing in its form – folding out into the gallery space, visceral and sensuous – a complex, and uncomfortable exploration of femininity. And Maddie Hobbs truly embodies the energy and playfulness of Cardiff’s degree show, which feels like a celebration of painting in all its forms. Hobbs’ expansive mixed-media piece occupies a large stretch of canvas. It is expressive and bold in design, referencing street art, landscape and different approaches to mark-making.

What is striking about all the work, and embodied in this selection, is an enjoyment and engagement with the tactility of surface and physicality of materials. Each artist demonstrates how complex, contemporary ideas can be explored with and through handmade processes, offering pathways towards imagining different futures, exploring selfhood and addressing the pressing questions of our time.

Swansea College of Art

"Celf Gain PCYDDS: Mae Stiwdio, Safle a Chyd-destun yn cwmpasu ymagwedd eang at addysgu celf gain, lle mae ymarfer artistig unigol yn tynnu ar, ac yn defnyddio, ystod eang o ddeunyddiau, cyfryngau, cysyniadau ac athroniaethau.

Ymarfer yn y stiwdio sydd wrth ei graidd ac mae’n cynnwys defnyddio gweithdai a gofodau personol arbenigol lle datblygir cysyniadau trwy beintio, lluniadu, ymarfer cerfluniol, fideo, sain, gosodwaith a pherfformio.

Mae’r cwrs yn annog pob myfyriwr i ystyried ei safle o fewn cymdeithas, gan ddarparu cyfle i weithio ochr yn ochr ag artistiaid a darlithwyr byd-enwog i archwilio maes arfer celf gain gyfoes sy’n esblygu’n gyson."

 "UWTSD Fine Art: Studio, Site and Context encompasses a broad approach to fine art teaching where individual artistic practice draws upon, and uses, a wide range of materials, media, concepts, and philosophies.

Studio practice is at its core and involves the use of specialised workshops and personal spaces where concepts are developed through painting, drawing, sculptural practice, video, sound, installation, and performance.

The course encourages all students to consider their position within society, providing an opportunity to work alongside internationally acclaimed artists and lecturers to explore the expanding and forever-evolving field of contemporary fine art practice."

Ewan Coombs

 Mae gwaith parhaus Ewan Coombs/Sid Lloyd ‘Dirty Being’  yn seiliedig   ar ryngweithiad dynol gyda safleoedd o ddirywiad, croniad gwaddodol, a mannau lle mae bywyd yn ffurfio allan o falurion o waith dyn a strwythurau sy’n bodoli yn ein hamgylchedd bob dydd.

//

Ewan Coombs/ Sid Lloyd’s ongoing body of work Dirty Being draws on human interaction with sites of degradation, sedimentary build up, and places where life forms out of manmade detritus and structures that exist in the surroundings of our everyday.

 Gan ymgorffori clai, gosodiadau a lluniadu, mae'r arfer amlddisgyblaethol hwn yn deillio o archwiliadau materol. Mae'r gwaith yn archwilio dinistrio'r amgylchedd a'n rôl o’i fewn; felly gwahoddir y gwyliwr i ddychmygu perthynas symbiotig yn hytrach na  perthynas parasitedd â natur.

//

 Incorporating clay, installation and drawing, this multidisciplinary practice is born from material explorations. The work explores the destruction of the environment and our role within it; thus the viewer is invited to imagine a symbiotic rather than parasitic relationship with nature.

Oisin McDaid

 Mae Oisín McDaid, fel artist, wedi’i swyno gan groesdoriad portreadau traddodiadol a thechnoleg blaengar. Trwy ei baentiadau mae McDaid yn archwilio'r cysyniad o hunaniaeth yn yr oes ddigidol.

Mae’n ceisio creu portreadau sy’n cyfuno byd blaengar celf ddigidol gyda’n harferion traddodiadol o beintio a ‘DeCollage’

Mae McDaid yn defnyddio A.I. i greu delweddau fel arf i herio syniadau traddodiadol o gynrychiolaeth.

//

Oisín McDaid, as an artist, is fascinated by the intersection of traditional portraiture and cutting edge technology. Through his paintings McDaid explores the concept of identity in the digital age.

Seeking to create portraits that combine the advancing world of digital art with our traditional practices of painting and ‘DeCollage’

McDaid uses A.I. generated imagery as a tool to challenge traditional notions of representation.

  Mae McDaid yn dymuno defnyddio ei waith i danio dadl bryfoclyd ynghylch y pryderon presennol o ble mae’r ffiniau real ac afreal yn uno, lle mae dilysrwydd, awduraeth a chynhyrchu delweddau yn cael eu herio o fewn y celfyddydau gweledol.Nod y gwaith a gynhyrchir gan McDaid yw sbarduno sgyrsiau am rôl technoleg wrth lunio ein dealltwriaeth o hunaniaeth a’r hyn y mae’n ei olygu i fod yn ddynol mewn gwirionedd.   Trwy ei gludweithiau cyfrwng cymysg mae McDaid yn archwilio asio ‘cyffyrddiad dynol’ paentio â’r delweddau artiffisial i greu gweithiau sy’n procio’r meddwl sy’n gwthio ffiniau.

//

 Through his mixed media collages McDaid explores blending the ‘human-touch’ of painting with the artificial images to create thought-provoking works that push boundaries. McDaid wishes to use his work to ignite provocative debate surrounding the current concerns of where the real and the unreal boundaries are merging, where authenticity, authorship and image production are contested within the visual arts.
The work produced by McDaid aims to spark conversations about technology’s role in shaping our understanding of identity and what it truly means to be human.

CARDIFF SCHOOL OF ART & DESIGN

Trwy gyfuno archwilio deunydd, ymarfer ac athroniaeth, mae myfyrwyr yn gallu archwilio'r cysylltiadau cymhleth rhwng syniadau damcaniaethol a chysyniadol a bwriad artistig. Maent yn cael mewnwelediad o gyd-destunau rhyngddisgyblaethol amrywiol, yn ymgysylltu â theori feirniadol ac yn dysgu ei chymhwyso trwy eu gwaith."

They gain insights from diverse interdisciplinary contexts, engage with critical theory and learn to apply them through their work."

Ben Cones

  Mae gwaith Ben Cones yn ymchwilio i ystod eang  o ddeallusrwydd artiffisial a’i effeithiau ar greadigrwydd a bywyd yn gyffredinol, gan ddefnyddio dychan yn aml fel ffordd o fynd i’r afael â’r problemau hyn.     Nod  ei waith yw cymylu’r llinellau rhwng realiti a ffuglen.

//

Ben Cones’ work investigates the rampant proliferation of artificial intelligence and its impacts on creativity and life as a whole, often using satire as a means to address these problems, his work aims to blur the lines between reality and fiction.

 Mewn rhai gweithiau, ceir ymdeimlad o ofn a’r anhysbys, wedi’i gyferbynnu gan leoliad cyfarwydd byd - byd nad yw mor wahanol i’n byd ni. Mae gwaith Cones yn ymgorffori dulliau amrywiol, yn bennaf dylunio graffeg, ffotograffiaeth a gwneud printiau ond mae hefyd yn mwynhau archwilio cyfryngau a thechnegau newydd ac yn gweld ei hun yn amlddisgyblaethol.

//

 In some works, there is a sense of fear and the unknown, contrasted by the familiar setting of a world not so different from our own. Cones’ practice incorporates various approaches, primarily graphic design, photography and printmaking but he also enjoys exploring new mediums and techniques and sees himself as multidisciplinary.

Lucy Cook

 Mae'r lleoedd unig a di-swyddogaeth mewn trefi glan môr gwledig a mannau maestrefol wedi bod yn borth i ymylon terfynol Cymru a Lloegr.

//

The lonely and functionless places in rural seaside towns and suburban spaces have proved to be a gateway into the liminal Edgelands of England and Wales.

 Rwyf wedi darganfod bod y diriogaeth hon yn bodoli ymhobman, yn amrywio o strwythurau anghyfannedd trefi diwydiannol i'r twyni tywod sy'n eistedd yn dawel ar ymyl arfordir Sir Benfro. Fy mwriad trwy fy mhaentiadau olew yw pwysleisio yr elfen o  absenoldeb yn y lleoedd hyn i gynrychioli potensial dychmygus y rhai sy'n cael eu hanwybyddu a'r rhai sathredig.

//

 I've found that this territory exists everywhere, ranging from the deserted structures of industrial towns to  the stretch of sand dunes that sit silent on the edge of the Pembrokeshire coast. Through my oil paintings, my intention is to accentuate the essence of absence in these places to represent the imaginative potential of the banal and overlooked.

Naomi Griffiths

 Trwy gydbwysedd cain o ffurf ac emosiwn, mae fy ngwaith  yn gwahodd gwylwyr i ymgolli yn amwysedd y noethlymun, gan herio canfyddiadau ac ennyn ymatebion i’r corff dynol.

//

  Through a delicate balance of form and emotion, my pieces invite viewers to immerse themselves in the ambiguity of the nude, challenging perceptions and eliciting reactions to the human body.

  Mae pob pwyth wedi'i osod yn ofalus iawn, yn rhoi bywyd i'm creadigaethau, gan eu gwneud yn gynrychiolaeth ddiriaethol o harddwch amrwd a bregus rwydd.Fel artist cain sy’n gwthio ffiniau celf gonfensiynol, nod fy nghelfyddyd yw mynd y tu hwnt i estheteg i ysgogi meddwl a sbarduno sgyrsiau am sut rydym yn canfod ac yn rhyngweithio â’r corff.

//

Each stitch meticulously placed, breathes life into my creations, making them a tangible representation of raw beauty and vulnerability. As a fine artist pushing the boundaries of conventional art, my art aims to go beyond aesthetics to provoke thought and spark conversations about how we perceive and interact with the body.

Maddie Hobbs

 My artwork explores emotion, movement, and the impact of patterns, shapes, and colour on perception. My process-driven approach involves layering different mediums such as, acrylic, ink, oil pastels, etc to create depth and texture.

 My artistic philosophy is rooted in exploration. I view each painting as a journey that evolves alongside my experiences and emotions. This fluid approach allows me to continuously adapt and grow, creating work that feels alive and dynamic.
