ABOUT
Our annual residency programme for recent Arts graduates 'Hot House' begins again in August. With artists selected from degree courses across South Wales, this month of curatorial support and funded practice provides graduates with a bridge into professional practice.
Hot House consists of weekly mentoring sessions throughout August within an open studio in Cardiff whilst the gallery is closed to the public, from the Curatorial Team at MADE, and an external professional artist visits, including full access to the studio space plus a bursary of £600 as an artist fee.
The mentoring will culminate in an exhibition of the work developed over the programme at Cardiff MADE, opening in early September. Hot House forms part of our Arts Council of Wales enabled annual programme.

This research was especially helped by Rebecca Wyn Kelly who helped guide me and have confidence in my love of wool just as she does. There was something continual and hopeful in wool, It has a quite continual perseverance that needs to be honoured.

It’s also been a refreshing reminder of the excitement of making work to show, communicating and working with new people.
Despite our differing styles, materials and approaches we were able to find a common thread through our work and create a cohesive exhibitionwhere we could bounce ideas off each other – rather than being confined to our own ideas by working alone was invaluable.

Being a resident artist of the Hot House program gave me a space to really push and pull at the corners of my practice.
Finishing a creative degree is a really scary time especially knowing that you won't easily be able to walk into a job with your new qualifications...
Hot house provided me with a space for my process to happen outside of the restraints of working towards deadlines.
The Hothouse Residency is set up to assist graduates at precisely the time they need it most - an essential transition from student to an independently exhibiting artist.
The importance of having programmes like these really cannot be overstated; they cultivate progression and actively promote engagement in a wider creative community that graduates may feel alienated from otherwise.
