ABOUT
The Higgins Photography Initiative was launched in 2022 by Cardiff M.A.D.E in partnership with ffotogallery, to run in parallel to the ffocws scheme (which supports emerging artists coming out of Higher Education with a career development programme).
The project aims to support a cohort of artists engaged with photography at a committed level, practicing outside of an education programme. The four current participants; Ffion Denman, Kaylee Francis, Tracy Harris and Jack Moyse were selected from an open call in June 2023.
Higgins Photography Initiative (In Ffocws) will run at Ffotogallery from 23.11.23 until 12.01.24.

The work displayed stands as an introduction to the ideas currently being developed in their practice within this tailored, six-month professional development programme.
Drawing on a pool of expertise from professional photographers, teachers, curators and academics, to deliver a structure which includes conversation, peer critiques and mentoring, this six month initiative aims to extend and focus their evolving practices within a sustainable trajectory.
The initiative was inspired by the work of the late Tom Higgins, an aspiring young photographer based in Cardiff, who used photography to channel and communicate his humour and humanity, as a means to question as well as observe. The programme has been designed and facilitated by a team of curatorial professionals and practitioners, moved to bring new voices into view.
The initiative is jointly funded through the support of the Arts Council of Wales and The Higgins Family.
Mae’r gwaith a arddangoswyd yn gyflwyniad i’r syniadau sy’n cael eu datblygu ar hyn o bryd yn eu gwaith o fewn y rhaglen ddatblygu broffesiynol chwe mis hon sydd wedi ei theilwra’n benodol.
Gan ddefnyddio cronfa o arbenigedd gan ffotograffwyr proffesiynol, athrawon, curaduron ac academyddion, i ddarparu strwythur sy’n cynnwys sgyrsiau, mentora a beirniadaethau gan gymheiriaid, nod y fenter chwe mis hon yw ymestyn a chanolbwyntio eu harferion sy’n esblygu o fewn taflwybr cynaliadwy.
Cafodd y fenter ei hysbrydoli gan waith y diweddar Tom Higgins, ffotograffydd ifanc uchelgeisiol wedi ei seilio yng Nghaerdydd oedd yn defnyddio ffotograffiaeth i sianelu a chyfathrebu ei hiwmor a’i ddynoliaeth, fel ffordd o gwestiynu yn ogystal ag arsylwi. Mae’r rhaglen wedi ei llunio a’i hwyluso gan dîm o ymarferwyr a phobl broffesiynol er mwyn dod â lleisiau newydd i’r golwg.
Mae’r fenter wedi’i hariannu ar y cyd drwy gefnogaeth Cyngor Celfyddydau Cymru a’r teulu Higgins.
Ffion Denman / Kaylee Francis / Tracy Harris / Jack Moyse
Ffion Denman is a photographer and educator currently living in Cardiff.
"In 1993 my father, Haydn Denman, travelled to the Chubut province of Patagonia, Argentina to photograph Welsh communities. He felt the need to contribute to a visual, historical record of ‘Y Wladfa’, a colony established in the 1860s with the intention of preserving Welsh language, culture and identity from domination by English influences.
In February 2023, thirty years after my father’s visit, I travelled to Argentina with the hopes of updating my family archive and documenting the Welsh community through my own lens. My six-month journey challenged the simplistic narratives I had learned when I was younger, and opened my eyes to the complex coexistence of Welsh settlers and the overlooked stories of the indigenous Mapuche and Tehuelche First Nations."
Kaylee is a documentary photographer interested in exploring issues relating to the representation and misrepresentation of lower socio-economic communities.
"The work entitled Rough edges, is an on-going documentation of a council estate in Swansea. I was born and brought up in the area and still have strong connections and relationships to the community. I have been drawn to photograph the places and people I know here, in a way that is true to my experience, and which I hope contributes a counter-narrative towards negative media representations typical of such communities.
My work considers the possibilities of using photography and activism for agency and social change. My intent is to explore how the lack of positive representation in the media affects the young impressionable mindsets of individuals coming from these areas."
Tracy is an Artist, Writer and Documentary film-maker based in Cardiff.
"Through this autobiographical series ‘Revolve’ I wish to explore the intricate maternal bond and deep relationship I have with my son who has cerebral palsy.
Combining a mixture of self-portraiture (captured on my iphone) with more performance style studio photos, I hope others will see themselves reflected through this navigation of parenthood; experiencing the emotions, fears and joy that have shaped my perspective as an artist and mother."
Kate Shooter jointly won the 2021 Solo Art prize with Ellie Young and in 2022 presented her solo exhibition ’wicker woman’ - joyous, irreverent ‘reflections of Kate’s own self-navigation, wrestling with life living in a household of males, locating her own Womaness, as an element which jostles and merges into a composite self.’
The latest works we are showing in this exhibition REVISITED, continue Shooter’s personal explorations, coming as they do from automatic responses via drawing. Appearing as expressions of more internal forces, urges of movement out from the body, away from facial recognition, the compositing of various versions / identities, as shown in the ‘grid’ (title)
Ffocws 2023
Ffocws is part of Ffotogallery’s mission to support emerging and early career artists in Wales who challenge the process, medium and application of photography. For this year’s selection we surveyed recent graduates across the country as well as aspiring artists through an open call in collaboration with Cardiff MADE (Higgins Initiative in Ffocws).
The exhibition brings together the work of fourteen talented artists touching on diverse themes ranging from identity, family, migration and disability to AI and community art practice. The wide-ranging individual perspectives on show remind us of the creative opportunities photography offers for human connection in our unpredictable and changing world.
This exhibition would not have been possible without the generosity of our supporters in particular Swansea College of Art (UWTSD), Cardiff Metropolitan University, University of South Wales, Carmarthen School of Art at Coleg Sîr Gar, Cardiff and Vale College, the Higgins family and Arts Council Wales.
Ffocws 2023
Mae Ffocws yn rhan o genhadaeth Ffotogallery i gefnogi artistiaid yng Nghymru sy’n dod i’r amlwg neu sydd ar ddechrau eu gyrfaoedd ac sy’n herio proses a chyfrwng ffotograffiaeth a’r ffordd y mae’n cael ei ddefnyddio. Ar gyfer detholiad eleni, aethom ati i arolygu graddedigion diweddar ar draws y wlad yn ogystal ag artistiaid uchelgeisiol drwy alwad agored mewn cydweithrediad â Cardiff MADE (Higgins mewn Ffocws).
Mae’r arddangosfa’n dod â gwaith pedwar ar ddeg o artistiaid dawnus at ei gilydd gan gyffwrdd â themâu gwahanol yn amrywio o hunaniaeth, teulu, mudo ac anabledd i ddeallusrwydd artiffisial ac arferion celf cymunedol. Mae’r safbwyntiau unigol eang sy’n cael eu harddangos yn ein hatgoffa am y cyfleoedd creadigol y mae ffotograffiaeth yn eu cynnig ar gyfer cysylltu pobl â’i gilydd yn ein byd newidiol ac anodd ei ragweld.
Ni fyddai’r arddangosfa hon wedi bod yn bosibl heb haelioni ein cefnogwyr, yn arbennig Coleg Celf Abertawe (PCDDS), Prifysgol Metropolitan Caerdydd, Prifysgol De Cymru, Ysgol Gelf Caerfyrddin yng Ngholeg Sir Gâr, Coleg Caerdydd a’r Fro a Chyngor Celfyddydau Cymru.
